Oasis – Argyll Street, London

1 x Display Raft System and 4 x Light Trough Systems

Ensuring unobtrusive, sympathetic lighting over escalators often presents a stumbling block for many store designers, but not so for Dalziel and Pow, who designed the recently re-opened Oasis flagship store on London’s Argyll Street.

The store’s interior has been intelligently designed to give a daytime feel on the ground floor and a more dramatic, evening impression upstairs. This in itself begged the question, how best to use escalator lighting as a means of interacting between the two environments?

This challenge was laid at the door of display system developers, EcoRIG, who installed four, 2m wide Raft Systems above the escalator, providing feature downlighting to the escalator wall.

Each system consists of an MDF raft, painted to match the ceiling, with four recessed downlight luminaires supplied by iGuzzini. Each raft can be quickly and individually lowered via remote control using the ceiling mounted winch system, for safe cleaning, maintenance and lamp change.

David Dalziel at Dalziel and Pow, was delighted with the end result, saying: “It is usually very difficult to design anything over an escalator due to its inaccessibility and excessive cost to maintain. However, the EcoRIG system employed in the Oasis Argyll Street store released any associated design restrictions and allowed us to provide feature lighting to enhance the wall treatment design”.
